Traditions™ St. Louis Hawken Kit.
"Building a flintlock or percussion cap rifle should be dedicated to the final achievement, firing the constructed piece. He whom builds, is also he who pulls the trigger. The Hawkens, I just completed, was fired last Saturday, May 5th; I intended on only firing two shots, just too see if it stayed together. However, the Hawkens was so responsive and accurate i became an obsession as well, as a pleasure too shoot, I ended up firing 10 shots of lead ball, 50 cal, with 90 Gr. FFG.; each shot was right on target, with a grouping of a one foot diameter circle., at 50 yards. The kit is a well engineered for very accurate fitting and assembly, and you will end up with a fantastic rifle for all around hunting and target. "
"Directions could be better, but went together great after some sanding of wood. Used Duracoat Durablue on barrel and it came out really well. Would recommend this kit and Muzzleloaders.com to anyone interested in this type of project."
"Fun rifle build, Traditions blueing turned our fantastic for a cold blueing. Rifle stock required a zip router, file and sand paper. Finished stock with walnut minwax and Old English furniture polish. Only cons were the directions were confusing, the diagrams required a magnifying glass, and the rifle sights were made out of plastic. Overall beautiful rifle."
"I always wanted a muzzle loader rifle. I figured I'd build my first and see how things go. I'm not a wood worker by any means so luckily there wasn't a lot of sanding and fitting to be done. I got the stock finishing kit and barrel bluing kit which helped a lot. I'm an impatient person and patients is what is needed with these kits. The rifle came out pretty nice for the first time. The only complaint I have and others have are the instructions. Some of the pictures of the parts don't look like the part and the ram rod spring installation I didn't understand. I ended up not using it and the ram rod stays just fine without it. I would definitely recommend this kit to anyone and would buy another. Thank You!"
"I bought my Hawken ago to fill in the nights while going through a divorce. It was great therapy. I was 36 and am now 62 and still love that rifle. I used a dremel to make fish scales on the brass butt plate and the side cover on the stock. I engraved my initials into the stock near the rear and added the date I finished it. I soon will refinish it and take it to shoot once again. Love the double set triggers. Mine originally came with a wood rod and I'm glad to see the new delrin rods. The wood ones could break and stab you, so I replaced mine with a fiberglass rod available then that is still very sound. My kit then came with both a 50 and a 54 cal barrels that I can change out. Been considering a 32 for fun shooting. Took one muley on one trip that I took it out. I just had married by best friend after one date. 26 years next month. She shoots better than I do. Can't go wrong with the kit if you are heads up and just a little creative to make it your own style. Good luck and good shootin!"
"Got my Hawkins kit sooner then expected, everything is there and the stock looks great can't wait to get it put together and use it, one thing the I instructions could be a little bigger, lol but they are very detailed. "
"I recently bought the kit took me a few day's to put it together but it was pretty easy to put together there were some parts of putting together that took time to put together because it's my first time putting it together but after a while of thinking I figured it out and the rifle looks great it came out wonderful the stock stain very nicely the only thing I dislike of the rifle is the one screw by the hammer gets in the way and it get stuck but a quick fix and it's working great haven't shot it went but it's a wonderful rifle I'm sure it will shoot fine."
"I haven't finished this rifle so I can't comment on the accuracy. It is a fun kit and the quality of the components and ease of assembly is good. Butt, why does Traditions cheapen the kit by supplying plastic sights? I contacted customer service and asked if metal sights are available for this rifle and was told yes; for $47.+ for the rear sight and $7.+ for the front sight."
"I can't believe how beautiful it came out , worked on it after work for about 30 hours and it looks great! Now I'm waiting for a nice day to go and try it, I think I'm going to have fun for years to come. "
"The rifle shot well and was easy to maintain for the most part, but then the screws started stripping when i would take it apart for its cleanings and i haven't been able to get a replacement part yet."
"My wife gave me this kit for christmas last year, and I found the kit overall easy to assemble. However, what I did not like about the kit, was that I had to remove alot of wood from the trigger assembly area to get the barrel tang screw to algin up with trigger assembly. Even though I had to remove so much wood, the finished product still came out great. Lucky for me, the trigger guard covered it up.
What I like most of all about this kit, is the dual triggers. This rifle will shoot one hole groups at 50yards. Also, the front sight may be made of plastic, but I found it to great on cutting down on glare."
"Will be displaying this one above the fireplace mantel!"
"This kid turned out great. I am so happy about the way it looks! Taking it out shooting this week."
"Thanks guys for recommending this rifle kit, what a fun build and it shoots great!"
