Built mine in 1970's

Surprised at the negative reviews. I built mine from the kit in 70's at about 13 years of age. Kit went together well and gun is perfect. Perhaps the quality control isn't the same now?

needs metalwork

I'm going to have to drill metal and possibly bend brass it should be fine but I cant recommend it for a new kit builder I might just have to hose clamp the barrel and ad Pic rail.

Decent power out to 3 feet

I knew I wasn't getting a top kit but it proved OK. There were normal kit misalignments but nothing deal breaking. the worst is the hammer does not lie up correctly to the nipple. Being a bit off center it still fires well but with the added risk of more cap pieces flying around..
In use I hit a 2 x 4 at 2 feet and it did not penetrate. I used a max load of about 30 gr. accuracy is non existant. If you are considering this for protection keep in mind this is literally a belly gun. It is a point blank last resort protection.
As a plinker maybe loading less powder will help but what's the use? You'd do better with a sling shot. Think about it. Same ammo (.440 RB) with more accuracy and much faster reloading. I love BP but ya gotta be realistic.
