Great flintlock

Shot and hunted with the Lyman flintlock Deerstalker for 15 years now, never had a problem. One time I had a miss fire because of rain. Stock and barrel have held up great and trust me, its been in some bad weather. It's really accurate with FFF powder, with patch and ball.

"Cheap" Rifle with Solid Gold Performance

I bought a lefthanded .54 cal. flint Deerstalker a few years- about the time it was dropped from the Lyman Catalog. I have other Investarms rifles and they are all (with minimal work) smooth, accurate and mechanical reliable.
Among "traditional" muzzleloader purists, the rubber buttpad and short barrelled rifle is often scorned as being "not authentic". Mechanically it is a fine functioning flintlock rifle. The touch hole needs a little work - countersink the inner side, and drill out to .067" with a #51 drillbit and ignition is 100% reliable.

I annoy the seasonal 'big game hunters' who stop by my range for fall sight-in days with their centerfire rifles. They point and laugh, until they notice that I'm routinely busting grapefruit placed out at the 100 yard berm.

My rifle doesn't know that it's supposed to be inferior because of the 24" barrel or is non-authentic because of the rubber buttpad. Nevertheless, you should what happens to a grapefruit upon impact with a .45 cal roundball.

Rifle needs better quality wood

I made the mistake of taking my Deerstalker out for a hunt in the rain. By the time I came home the whole gun stock started to swell and crack. I returned it immediately for another one. Then I had the gun sent out to have the stock Tung Oiled. Now there's no guarantee that it will not crack again but if it does i'm going synthetic!

Bad stock/Poor quality

I took my 50 cal. flintlock deer stalker out for a hunt during a light rain storm. When I came back my wood stock was swollen and cracked in multiple places. I had to return it back to the dealer and get a replacement. On my replacement I had the wood stock sealed to prevent the same thing from happening. Also my Frizzen rubs against the barrell when closing; causing the bluing to wear down to the bare metal. Not what I would expect from a 500 dollar flintlock!
