Best Muzzleloader Bullets of 2017

Inline Muzzleloader Bullets

Finding the right inline muzzleloading bullet can be intimidating as there are so many different options available. As each brand and model of muzzleloader is designed for a specific purpose, each muzzleloader bullet is designed for specific applications. In this article, Muzzle-Loaders.com will go over the most popular and highest performing bullets in black powder shooting and hunting.

Full-Bore Conical Bullets

For inline bullets, there are two distinct styles: full-bore conical bullets and sabots. Full-bore conicals are a true .50 caliber bullet and leave no plastic residue in the barrel. The best full-bore conical bullets are the PowerBelt Platinum bullets and the Federal B.O.R. Lock bullets. The PowerBelt Platinum series is a high-performance bullet that is designed to handle a full magnum load of powder and still maintain its accuracy. The Federal B.O.R. Lock bullets feature an innovative design that collapses the outside layer to create a gas seal needed for propulsion. Both of these bullets have long-range capabilities and have an excellent ballistic coefficient. Other recommended full-bore bullets include the Hornady FPB and the PowerBelt Aerolite series.

Saboted Muzzleloader Bullets

Saboted muzzleloader bullets are a .45 caliber projectile with a plastic sleeve, allowing it to be shot in a .50 caliber muzzleloader. Saboted bullets are extremely accurate, and although they can leave plastic residue, it is hard to argue with their performance. The best sabots are the Barnes SpitFire T-EZ and the Hornady SST bullets. With Barnes established quality, the T-EZ bullets are easy to load and have great expansion after hitting its target. The Hornady SST bullets are easy to load and have great accuracy on the range and in the field. The SST’s are also the best bang for your buck, starting at $15 for a pack of 20. Other recommended inline sabots include the T/C Shockwave and Barnes Expander series.

Colorado, California, Oregon, and Idaho Legal Bullets

In the states of Colorado, California, and Oregon, the best inline bullet is the Thor full-bore conical bullet. Made from 100% copper, the Thor lineup offers great expansion while using little to no plastic in its design. The 250 and 300 grain ballistic tipped bullet are Colorado legal and California legal, while the 247-grain hollow-point bullet is Oregon legal. For Idaho hunters, the PowerBelt Pure Lead bullets are the best Idaho legal bullets available.
